The idea of \u201cspeaking up\u201d and using one<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">s voice is often the most common an acknowledged way people participate in social media; however, \u201clurking\u201d is\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">also\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">important for the continued growth\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">and participation in social media. The people who lurk are providing an audience for those \u201cspeaking up\u201d to preform to and get reactions from, encouraging them to continue to share. Without people listening, social medias would die out; lurkers \u201ccontribute a mode of receptiveness that encourages others to make public contributions\u201d (81).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0Twitter, as a\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">social<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0media, also plays off the idea of sound with its name; Twitter can apply to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u201ccalling of birds, or the \u2018idle\u2019 chatter of humans\u201d (83)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">. The constant chatter of humans can be both\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">entertaining<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0and difficult to navigate and understand with \u201ca stream of multilayered information\u201d (83). One can have a tweet about a\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">celebrity<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0blog,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">political<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0news, and a picture of a dog doing something crazy all in the span of seconds. This complex of information allows for many Twitter users to establish different types of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">relationships<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0with the social media. Many will choose to share personal information while others choose to retweet other people\u2019s thoughts or not post at all. However, all \u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">disclosure made in social media spaces develop a relationship with an audience of listeners\u201d (83)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">. However, in 2009, when the piece was written, the norms of social media had not yet\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">developed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">, leaving the relationship between audience and speaker unclear and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">difficult<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0to define. In recent year, the increase in participation in\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">social<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0media has developed more norms. Corporations and politicians struggle to keep balanced communication with their audience with the growth in the platforms, so the expectation for constant responses has gone down. Therefore, they have moved to using their social medias for promotions and marketing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">Individual<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0users have also been able to set their own standard for how they are going to participate in social media. Lurking is no longer seen as a drain on social media; it has even been glorified. Many people openly enjoy, and even pride themselves in, being able to stalk other people.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">Therefore,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0the relationship between listener and audience can\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">defined<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">\u00a0by the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">individual, breaking away from the idea of a norm<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW21800845\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW21800845\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW21800845\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crawford talks about social media and the importance of the listener and audience in social media.
