Bad <\/span><\/span>Lip Reading<\/span><\/span> Clips, while comedic, also makes one feel uneasy. The voice in the video looks like it is coming from the individual when it is understood that the video had been dubbed to make it seem like they are saying <\/span><\/span>comical<\/span><\/span> things. Voice is something personal to the <\/span><\/span>individual, whether one believes <\/span><\/span>in Barthe\u2019s idea of voice coming from\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cdeep down in the cavities, the muscles, the membranes, the cartilage\u201d <\/span><\/span>of the <\/span><\/span>individual<\/span><\/span>\u2014 also known as the <\/span><\/span>grain\u2014<\/span><\/span>or one <\/span><\/span>believes<\/span><\/span> in <\/span><\/span>Aristotle’s<\/span><\/span> idea that voice comes the breath hitting \u201cthe soul resident\u201d of the body\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>Barthes 505<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Aristotle<\/span><\/span> 670<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>. It becomes <\/span><\/span>unsettling<\/span><\/span> to hear a computerized robot voice coming from a human\u2019s mouth. The robotic sounding voice leads us to fall into the uncanny valley. The uncanny valley occurs when a humanoid object, which appears <\/span><\/span>almost truly<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>human or <\/span><\/span>strangely<\/span><\/span> familiar to a human, causes observers to feel strange and repulsed. The voice of a computer gives one a very different <\/span><\/span>feeling then when\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201csomeone in flesh and bone who emits it\u201d (<\/span><\/span>Cavarero<\/span><\/span> 522). The voice of human is <\/span><\/span>strong but<\/span><\/span> limited. Society has trained people <\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span> think, act, and speak in certain ways that are <\/span><\/span>suitable<\/span><\/span> for certain situations, making the bad <\/span><\/span>lip reading<\/span><\/span> live footage\u00a0<\/span><\/span>clips feel more uncomfortable. <\/span><\/span>However, the cinematic lip reading <\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span> Star Wars, including nonhumans and music, makes is easier to watch and trust since one is not listening for the flaws<\/span><\/span>; t<\/span><\/span>he <\/span><\/span>setting<\/span><\/span>, often used <\/span><\/span>comedy<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>llows for <\/span><\/span>it because of <\/span><\/span>viewer<\/span><\/span> expectations<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0While the political stage adds <\/span><\/span>comedic<\/span><\/span> value, it also makes the sound untrustworthy. With sight being very linear and direct, sound is more nebulous; <\/span><\/span>so<\/span><\/span> while the video is easy to trust the words are not, making the viewer second guess the presentation. Overall, while the videos are <\/span><\/span>entertaining<\/span><\/span>, the uncanny value and setting makes the viewer <\/span><\/span>feel<\/span><\/span> uncomfortable.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
